CAL7 – A New Generation of Freewheeling Diodes
CAL7 diodes pair Semikron Danfoss’s proven Controlled Axial Lifetime (CAL) diode design with the latest thin wafer technology for smooth switching in high-power industrial applications.
When used as a freewheeling diode in anti-parallel with the latest generation IGBTs, the CAL7 exhibits a soft turn-off that reduces overvoltage peaks and ringing. This, in turn, allows for lower gate resistors and lower switching losses. The smoother switching also reduces the EMI footprint of the converter.
The use of thin wafers also improves power cycling capability as the reduced silicon thickness causes less stress on front- and backside connections. CAL7 diodes are available inside a wide variety of new power modules as well as in bare die form.
