Power Electronics for Datacenters
Today, both small and large data centers rely on Semikron Danfoss power modules inside UPS systems and motor drives for reliable power transfer and cooling. Power modules such as SEMITRANS 3 and SEMiX 5 are core components in 3-level converters used for today’s megawatt-class central UPS systems.
High-Efficiency Power Modules for the Next Generation of Data Centers

Our strong motor drive portfolio is present in the variety of VFDs used in fan, pump, and compressor drives in data centers. And reliable, thyristor-equipped, SEMIPACK modules make up critical bypass and static transfer switches (STS).
The future hyperscale data centers and AI factories being designed now will need high-efficiency SiC modules and scalable power blocks to accommodate new power generation and distribution architectures. DC distribution, in particular, requires new converter topologies such as solid-state transformers (SST). The SEMITOP E2 with 2kV SiC MOSFETs is well suited for enabling this cell-based topology.
SEMITRANS 3+ - The New Version of a Classic

The ubiquitous 62mm has been upgraded. With a complete internal redesign, the SEMITRANS 3+ pushes TNPC circuit configurations to higher power and enables easy implementation of SiC devices. The identical external appearance means the SEMITRANS 3+ can easily upgrade existing SEMITRANS 3 designs.

SiC Power Modules for DC Distribution

2kV SiC is an enabler for 2-level converters in 1500VDC applications. Already an established solution for solar and energy storage systems, these modules are ideal for DC distribution techniques under discussion for large-scale data centers. SiC-equipped industrial power modules make upcoming solid-state transformers possible; efficiently transferring power across the medium frequency transformer (MFT) isolation barrier. The cellular topology of SSTs is well-served by SEMITOP E2 modules, which combine the latest SiC chipsets with outstanding thermal performance, low-inductance, and easy PCB integration.

In this interview, Carsten Schreiter discusses how Semikron Danfoss technology powers critical applications across the entire data center ecosystem. From MiniSKiiP modules as critical components in fan and pump drives, SKiiP solutions for integrated compressor drives in cooling systems, to megawatt-class UPS systems powered by SEMITRANS 3 and SEMiX 5– our technologies are at the heart of ensuring reliable data center operation. Looking ahead, Carsten explores how the rapid growth of AI workloads, the shift toward DC distribution, and the emergence of solid-state transformers are shaping the future. Learn how innovations like the SEMITRANS 3+, CAL7 diode, 2 kV SiC modules in SEMITOP E2, and SemiSeal protection are enabling higher efficiency, improved performance, and long-term reliability in even the most demanding environments.
SemiSeal - H2S Protection and More

The global spread of data centers exposes external or machine-room equipment to air that may contain sulfur-containing chemicals from e.g. fertilizers used in farming or high pollution areas. These chemicals (typ. H2S) can react with the metals inside power modules and cause fatal short circuits when dendrites are formed. SemiSeal provides a protective layer inside power modules to prevent dendrite formation on critical surfaces. As an added benefit, in circuit products, it can also increase humidity robustness.
