Product Material Compliance

Semikron Danfoss is committed to improving the protection of human health and the environment through product regulations and standards. We adhere to product safety regulations and standards to ensure that our design, manufacturing, testing and certification processes meet market requirements.

Striving to Improve

Our goal is to develop products that not only perform, but also prioritize the safety and well-being of people and the protection of the environment. We are constantly striving to improve our policies and procedures to meet both current legal requirements and future regulations.

Compliance with Product Regulations

Semikron Danfoss complies with the relevant regulations and standards at national, regional, and global levels. We monitor and communicate new requirements to the organization in a systematic way, ensuring alignment of processes and used materials across our organization.

REACH (SCIP), RoHS, TSCA, Prop65, POP, ODS, Conflict Minerals (CMRT), CRM, PFAS are among the regulations product material compliance is covering to meet costumers demands and legal obligations.

Material Data Reporting

In order to ensure compliance in products, suppliers should provide Full Material Declarations (FMD) for new and modified components or submit Material Data Sheets (MDS) detailing the material and substance composition of a part.

Semikron Danfoss has designated tools to assist us and our suppliers in the process of data reporting. One of these tools is IMDS (International Material Data System). It is the automotive industry's tool for exchanging compliance data. The IMDS database is used to communicate all necessary information from our suppliers to our customers. This structured approach ensures that we can efficiently collect and manage all relevant data related to material composition and compliance.

Additionally, we are launching regular campaigns to ensure that supplier data is up to date so that we can fulfill our due diligence obligations.

We achieve this via regulatory foresight, robust data, and effective supply chain communication. This enables Semikron Danfoss to produce safe and sustainable products, and meeting compliance obligations to customers and regulators.

Conflict Minerals

Semikron Danfoss is a non-SEC registered company and, therefore, not directly affected by the legal obligations regarding conflict minerals per Section 1502 of the Dodd-frank Financial Reform Act.

Nevertheless, we are voluntarily and diligently working with our suppliers, customers, and industry to obtain reasonably available information regarding the potential use of any conflict minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum, gold) in our products and to create a consistent system of controls to ensure transparency and traceability for the conflict minerals supply chain.

Furthermore, Semikron Danfoss is also a member of the UN-Initiative “Global Compact” and actively engaged in providing and supporting compliance with high environmental standards and human rights.

Life Cycle Assessment

Life Cycle Assessment

Conducting Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) has been a fundamental practice at Semikron Danfoss. Since 2022, we have significantly advanced our LCA capabilities, making them a key component of our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy. LCAs offer a thorough analysis of the environmental impacts of our products throughout their entire life cycle – from the extraction of raw materials, through production and use, to their end-of-life disposal. This approach will be essential in our product development, allowing us to closely monitor our products’ emissions and continuously seek improvements.

To support this initiative, we have recruited LCA specialists and invested in developing this expertise across all business divisions. We have also acquired state-of-the-art LCA software and established a unified approach for conducting LCAs within our organization. The integration of LCAs into our sustainability assessments will be mandatory for the development of new products.

Our LCA specialists play a crucial role in embedding Life Cycle Assessments into our product development processes. They support our initiatives on circularity and decarbonization by identifying key areas for improving the environmental performance of our products. This systematic approach ensures that we continue to innovate sustainably and reduce our environmental footprint.

KBA Type Approval / UL Certification

We manage actions according to a product type approval e.g. from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (“Kraftfahrtbundesamt”, short: KBA) and are the direct contact for the Federal Motor Transport Authority. Furthermore, we handle product certifications like those from UL. Almost all our industry related products have an UL product certification according to UL 1557 / UL 61800 / UL 1434 or UL 583. All product certification related actions to external certification bodies for all production sites of Semikron Danfoss are handled by the Product Material Compliance Department Nuremberg.
